Pinch Pots

Once of the first things I learned was making pinch pots. If throwing on a wheel scares you, try pinching! You start with a round ball of clay and push your thumb through the middle to just about a 1/2 inch or inch from the bottom. Then you start “pinching” and strking the clay around and up the sides, to a bit below the top, making a shape that appeals to you. This is an example of a very simple pinch pot that I hammered with a ball peen hammer on the outside for some texture. I glazed it with two colors (oatmeal and amber) at an angle. To get the flat bottom I just lightly pound the piece on my wedging mat to flatten it. Be sure to check the video link on my home page sidebar “Hand Building: Pinch Pots.
